Like olivier_g, I can confirm that it's perfectly fine on a road bike, although 6km of the climb and 2km of the descent to Laffrey would be better on a gravel bike. The road seems to have been tarmacked in the past, so it's fairly flat with some gravel on it (but not dangerous). The worst part is at the start of the descent, but it's not steep, so it's okay too. Nice views on the way down... read more

Particularly steep start (some sections approaching 20%) with little respite. The rest is more regular.
I recommend gravel for this climb, given that a significant section of the road is unpaved.
Once you reach the pass, you can continue on the track opposite (poor quality), which will take you back down to Laffrey for a loop, and which also offers a beautiful unobstructed view of the Taillefer and Belledonne massifs.
