i climbed up from saint jean via combe laval. the last 4k after col de la machine, almost flat, are stunning as you ride through a lovely wooded forest (silver birch i think).

A variant of the Machine pass on the Saint-Jean-en-Royans side, which will be very useful for people who are subject to vertigo, as it will allow them to avoid the Combe Laval.
Obviously, it is much less spectacular...
Variante du col de la Machine versant Saint-Jean-en-Royans qui sera bien utile aux personnes sujettes au vertige, car elle leur permettra d'éviter la Combe Laval.
Évidemment, elle est forcément beaucoup moins spectaculaire…
