A hidden gem is no exaggeration in describing this tough col. If at the foot of the col de Meyrand you take the D203 towards Joyeuse, after a good 3 km you can cross a small bridge on the right, over the bridge straight on to a narrow goat track, this is the start of the col de Beaumont from Roche. The road is not 2 m wide and some loose gravel here and there. Through the forest begins a breathtaking climb . After 600 metres you get the first U-turn and so one U-turn after another follows. After each hairpin, the road seems to rise more and more. After 3 km you come out of the shade into an open area and the road surface gets better and better but the hairpin bends keep following each other and it keeps going up steeply until after 4.5 km you have to turn left to Beaumont. From here, the road barely climbs at all with the occasional exception. So the 5.5 % average you get in the first part. The climb has plenty of shade which is no luxury in this region in summer. If the col were to go up proportionally over its entire length as it does in the first kms, it would certainly be first category. A must is the descent via the D248, beautiful road surface and the first 4 km not too difficult but the last 3 km very technical. Also along this side, the climb to Beaumont is a gem.
