This ride from Venasque to Le Beaucet is a fair challenge through lovely, quiet contryside but it's missing the best bit. When you get to Le Beaucet don't take the D39A all the way into the village, take the road up to the castle by going almost back on yourself. Not exactly sure of the gradient but I'm guessing it's well in excess of 15% – in any event you'll be pushing hard to reach the top. But it's worth it - the view from the castle towards St Didier and le Mont Ventoux is spectacular. A good spot to eat your packed lunch.

I did this climb at the end of the day during a heat wave (temperatures of 46 degrees). It was a bit less hot on this section then because it was mostly in the shade. My legs were already quite tired when I encountered this climb, and I still had to rake up quite a bit.

So suddenly you're up against it, a real calf-biter. A nice piece of cycling, then time enough to rest.
