I rode this beautiful balcony road in august 2023 and really enjoyed the scenery. Staying in Alpe d'huez, I joined the route from the descent and thus skipped the first couple of kilometers, if you count the segment from Bourg. The balcony road part of the climb is a bit inconsistent with some hard passages but mostly fairly easy gradients. You should definitely take some stops on the way and take in the views of the valley below. If you dare, you could even go close to the stone fence and look straight down - I was too scared to do so...
After the balcony road comes a bit of flat, and you join the road to Auris ski station / village with 2km to go. The last few kilometers are on a bigger road, but I found it quite peaceful and perfect for a last hard push. At the Auris village, there is a small grocery store, so you can tank up and enjoy the perfect panorama views.
Nice narrow road on the side of a ravine, no traffic (early October, maybe that helps a bit?), magnificent panorama over the valley with Le Bourg d'Oisans on the right. A must do!

Superb balconies! By taking a Gravel track to the right 1km before Auris-en-Oisans, it is possible to join the road linking the Col de Sarenne to l'Alpe d'Huez. This Gravel track climbs to the Col de Cluy (3.4km at 8％), then 1km downhill and 2km uphill separates you from the road again.
Superbes balcons ! En prenant une piste Gravel à droite 1km avant Auris-en-Oisans, il est possible de rejoindre la route qui relie le col de Sarenne à l'Alpe d'Huez. Cette piste Gravel monte au col de Cluy (3,4km à 8％), puis 1km en descente et 2km en montée vous séparent encore de la route.

Wonderful! One of the most beautiful roads I know. Take it easy and enjoy it. And watch out for stones on the otherwise reasonable road. It was quiet, even though it was a busy Saturday on the Alp.
Prachtig! Een van de mooiste weggetjes die ik ken. Vooral rustig aan doen en genieten. En oppassen voor stenen op de verder redelijke weg. Het was rustig, terwijl het een drukke zaterdag op de Alp was.
Great climb and lovely example of a 'balcony' route, breathtaking views and well worth the effort at the start up the first few hairpins of Alpe d'Huez. Lovely descent to Lac du Chambon, the only downside being the last, short section along the D1091.
You can combine this with Les Deux Alpes to make a great loop back to Bourg d'Oisans
Beautiful balcony route which in fact starts from La Garde. Just before Auris station (probably in the summer nothing to see) descent to Lac du Chambon. Along the way you have phenomenal views. Top!
Prachtige balkonroute die in feite start vanuit La Garde. Vlak voor Auris-station (allicht in de zomer niks te zien) afdaling ingezet richting Lac du Chambon. Onderweg heb je fenomenale uitzichten. Toppertje!
Quiet climb that at some parts is quite tough but everywhere very good to do. I rode it with the balcony route and for the height meters I had to ride up extra.
Rustige klim die op sommige stukken best pittig is maar overal erg goed te doen. Ik reed hem met de balkon route en was voor de hoogtemeters nog extra naar boven gereden.
If you talk about a gem of a climb then it is this climb. The first 2km are the steepest to Alpe d'Huez. In La Garde (refill the bottle on the right side) turn right where a short flat piece follows. Here the climb starts to get good and is certainly irregular. Magnificent views into the valley because you really cycle on a balcony here. If you look closely you can also see the road from the valley.
After the balcony it becomes less spectacular but still a nice climb.
The last part (after les Cours) is wider and lends itself to give it a good acceleration towards Auris, which you can see. In the summer it is deserted here.
Als het hebt over een pareltje van een beklimming dan is het deze klim. De eerste 2km zijn de steilste naar Alpe d'Huez. In La Garde (nog even de bidon bijvullen aan de rechterkant) rechtsaf slaan waar een korte vlak stukje volgt. Hier begint de klim gelijk goed op te lopen en is zeker onregelmatig te noemen. Schitterende vergezichten de vallei in want je fiets hier echt op een balkon. Als je goed kijkt kun je vanuit het dal ook de weg zien lopen.
Na het balkon wordt het allemaal minder spectaculair maar nog steeds een fijne klim.
Het laatst breder stuk (na les Cours) leent zich er voor om nog een keer goed gas te geven naar Auris dat je kunt zien liggen. In de zomer is het hier overigens uitgestorven.

The start over the first 5 turns of Alpe d'Huez is already the steepest part of the climb.
After the turnoff in La Garde there is a slight descent between the trees and then a blissful uphill ride on a narrow road with hardly any traffic on one of the most spectacular cycling routes I ever saw: "Les Balcons d'Auris.
A road ridge, like a gutter high above the valley, with only a curb along the side and interrupted by some half open and one closed tunnel. The view is frightening but also fabulous!
After that it's less steep for a while and we take a left turn through the village of Le Cert for the final kilometers to the summery deserted ski station. On the way you'll get some great views, especially of the snowy peaks of the Ecrins National Park on the other side of the valley.
Conclusion: Absolutely cycle for the fabulous "Balcons".

De start over de eerste 5 bochten van Alpe d'Huez is al direct het steilste deel van de klim.
Na de afslag in La Garde volgt een lichte afdaling tussen de bomen om nadien zalig bergop te fietsen op smalle weg met amper verkeer op één van de spectaculairste fietsroutes die ik ooit onder de wielen kreeg: "Les Balcons d'Auris.
Een wegrichel, als dakgoot hoog boven het dal, met enkel een boordsteen langs de kant en onderbroken door enkele half open en één gesloten tunnel. Uitzicht is beangstigend maar ook fabelachtig!
Nadien is het even minder steil om de linkse afslag door het dorpje Le Cert te nemen voor de stevige slotkilometers naar het zomers verlaten middelgroot skistation, met onderweg vergezichten waar vooral de besneeuwde pieken van het Nationaal park des Ecrins aan de overkant in het oog sprongen.
Besluit: Absoluut fietsen voor de fabelachtige "Balcons".
Mijn vrouw fietste met elektrisch huurfiets mee en was danig onder de indruk.
