Aesthetically, this is a very nice climb with wonderful views and beautiful green landscapes. The Basque Country is very green and that makes the scenery, if you have a sunny day, a feast for the eyes. This climb of the Azurki is a slop for the calves and the upper legs. The climb starts with about three kilometres above 10% average. Just to wake you up. This first part is over rather bumpy tarmac. No holes or potholes, more as if the road surface had not been rolled over. Then follows a desc... read more

Actually, these are two climbs that you can also do separately. Combined, they give the two-stage rocket as described here. The first climb is the toughest and the most beautiful, but the second one is also great.
We are in the Basque country, so the 14-15% parts are just part of it.

This climb of the Azurki is a slop for the calves and the upper legs. The climb starts with about three kilometres above 10% average. Just to wake you up. This first part is over rather bumpy tarmac. No holes or potholes, more as if the road surface had not been rolled over. Then follows a descent and then the tough climbing begins again. The gradients here are also well in excess of 10%. The road surface is fine in the second part. I haven't seen any traffic other than a flock of sheep.
I suspect that the Tour of the Basque Country passes here, given the number of names painted on the road surface.
Nice climb, but oh so tough!
