Ascent made on a very hot summer Sunday. A not inconsiderable condition to specify 1) that the valley is very shady so you can breathe in the morning 2) fairly continuous traffic, intense but not too annoying. I imagine that during the week it is a different story. The climb starts out tough at Baceno, then softens for a few kilometres. From the moment you cross the bridge, the climb gives you much less of a chance to rest. The road surface is all in all more than acceptable if you put the mountain valley in context. With the exception of the first tunnel, which is poorly lit and in poor condition. Frontal lighting is also highly recommended. The waterfalls and the peace of the valley on arrival are worth the climb. At the top, I did not notice any fountains or bars reachable by bike.

A breathtaking climb this is! First through the lovely villages of Baceno and Croveo with traditional houses and pretty churches. Then from Goglio the terrain becomes more dramatic and the road steeper.

Here you encounter an over half km long tunnel, that looks more like a cave. There are lights inside, but they are far apart so there are dark spots too. The tunnel is also well over 10% and the road surface is rough, with water flowing on the road even though it hadn't rained for a while.

After the tunnel there is a lovely waterfall on the left. After a really steep bit (probably 18.5%), you reach another tunnel. This one is short and flat, so you can see the end when you enter.

After a few hairpins you reach Alpe Devero's parking lot. A very nice wide plain opens up there and that's where the ski resort is with some hotels and a bar.

Apart from the first tunnel, the tarmac is fine all the way.
