Perfect road surface. The climb is tough for a total of perhaps 5-6 km, and it is a false flat for the rest of it. As this is the main road to Zermatt, expect traffic until Taesch, where it gets quieter. (all motorised traffic needs a permit to access Zermatt). Beautiful views for most of the way up, and there are a few secondary roads you can use to avoid the main road, so keep an eye on them when planning your spin. The view on Matterhorn is breathtaking. I went there in early May, so the traffic wasn't too bad.
