This climb offers more varied scenery than the usual route up the Whinlatter Pass from Lorton via the B5292. The climb starts up a narrow lane on pretty poor tarmac but it does improve significantly. Don't miss the right turn (my Garmin did) about 1.4 km into the climb - it's signed Keswick Narrow Gated Road. This section is across open mountain side with a much more open aspect than the climb on the B5292 gives. On the negative side there are two gates but the route is well worth ... read more

This section is across open mountain side with a much more open aspect than the climb on the B5292 gives. On the negative side there are two gates but the route is well worth it if you want a more scenic start to the Whinlatter Pass climb. After after a short descent to cross Blaze Beck and a climb up the other side you join the B5292 route. From there it's 2.4 km of gentle gradient and, after the faff of stopping to open gates, time for a full gas blast to the summit.
