The surface is only of good quality at the start of the climb, and then becomes very uneven.
However, for those of you who are looking for a bit of scenery, you can get it right from the start of the climb. The views along the way are magnificent.

The Urtzumeatza is actually a connecting road between east and west but with very little traffic and fortunately because the road is so narrow that cyclists and cars have difficulty passing. Also the road surface is bad and very bumpy and here and there after rain showers some earth on the ground but the beautiful scenery makes it so beautiful.
It is a bit of a search to find the foot of the climb in Etxalar but once left and on the right road the road goes in many curves and through a dense forest and greenery. The start is very tough with in the first km parts between 15 and 20% but gradually it becomes more bearable and after 3,5 km even flat and then a runner you can go up with the big mill if you have some left in the tank because the first kilometers are killing.
This col has been climbed several times in the past during the Tour of Navarra, one of the toughest stage races for amateurs. But a climb like I like them not too long and a quiet second part although the beginning is a bit heavy for me. Definitely a must if you're in the area.
