It climbs the East flank of the Gempen plateau from Dornach. Near the end of this village, it branches off towards Hochwald from the main road to Gempen which climbs to the same plateau in about 5.5 km at 5.8%. This climb to Hochwald is more direct and shorter than the main road climb and tends to have much lower traffic (eg no postbus, hardly any motorcycles). Combined the two climbs make an excellent interval training loop => steep one up, and the gentler one down, and then repeat.
