Tough but rewarding climb. Set off from Cartisoara early to avoid the traffic. It was misty wet and cold at the top so do take a jacket and warm up at one of the restaurants at the top. The descent on the south side had heavy traffic with the tight switchbacks which the cars had trouble with and they do all stop to feed the bears that you will see at the side of the road, whose stares can be a bit concerning. Do make sure your brakes are working before descending!

From Cârțișoara to Bâlea is the best way to do the Transfăgărășan for sure, is shorter, more scenic, it has more hairpin turns and s-curves.

Amazing route. Best to start early in the morning to avoid traffic. On the top, near lake Lacul Balea there is a tourist area for hot food/snacks/water. Nothing else from start to top.

J'ai fait cette montée de très bonne heure et donc avec une circulation modérée. La montée est relativement facile mais longue. Le paysage est magnifique et la route fait de magnifiques courbes et virages. Je pense que cette route doit être très fréquenté en pleine journée d'été mais reste un de mes meilleurs souvenirs de la tcrno5.
