As a nice alternative try the community cafe in Llandegla - 15 min ride to the north.
Start of the climb is nice and easy albeit on a main road. Once you get on to the oldshoe the real climb starts. Narrow road, can just about pass any cars coming down. Rewarded with a coffee stop at the top.
