Gradual climb on a wide road with slow bends. Can be busy with traffic, but not too much during my climb. You climb through moorland with good views (unless you ride the last part in the mist as I did). Descent the other way to Ladybower reservoir is great.... read more

Can't believe it - not a single review of The Snake on here! It's pretty famous among road cyclists: even southerners like me have heard of it. I rode it in 1999 on a lovely summer evening with a decent tailwind, so flew up it. I was lucky to have light traffic but I know it gets horribly busy these days. A few years back it was closed to cars for repairs, and cyclists flocked to it then as to a shrine. It is a wide main road that lazily bends with easy grades on its way up into the featureless moorland bleakness. Not the prettiest part of the Peak District!
