Picked up a short alternative shortcut to France's highest and most beautiful village on the descent of Col Agnel.
Turn left just before the road narrows to enter Pierre Grosse.
Start with a short descent to climb steeply after crossing the mountain river on a narrow road. Followed by 2 very steep hairpin bends through the forest. After Chalet des Amoureux (food & drink) and small ski infrastructure, the route flattens out on panoramic open plateau with a lone cross. You enter car-free St Veran past one of the car parks. Definitely cycle down the authentic main street to the highest point (2040m) near the church.
There are places to eat & drink, some water sources and artisan shops.
There is no traffic on the entire route, but the last part of the route is a bit less smooth.
Descend back down along another wide asphalt road to get back on the Col Agnel route in Moulines and Queyras.
Very nice to do on the way back from Col Agnel and visit charming village of St Veran and have something to eat or drink.
This is a totally unknown and quite difficult climb to find. But do not miss it. It is quiet, you drive through nature (almost no cars) and you will encounter some steep walls. Afterwards you arrive in the beautiful village of Saint Veran and you can drive back via a good wide and safe road...
