Great climb for anyone wanting to begin testing themselves in the Southwest of England, nicely shaded from the elements for the rise out of Tavistock, although this is the gnarliest part of the climb, I would advise a few KM's in the legs to have them warm. Once over the cattle grid and onto Dartmoor you are exposed to the elements, but the views are sensational, also great to have lots of sheep and Dartmoor ponies cheering you on. nice descent into Merrivale; I would advise trying to carry some speed from the down hill to kick you into the next up hill. Then a great climb up to the red phone box which if you can get in a good rhythm comes into sight just as the climb levels so if you have anything left in the legs you can put a last ditch effort in to the top. Final bonus for this climb is the descent afterwards into Princetown which has a few little cafes and pubs for refreshments.
Great endurance climb with great scenery of the area
One of the longest and hardest climbs in Dartmoor. Can get quite busy in summer, but the road is wide so it’s not really a problem. Some incredible scenery. The climbing is broken into three sections. The first goes through the farmland before a flatter section. Next comes a ramp onto the open moorland. Another flat section and a short descent into Merrivale before the final ramp to the summit.
