Spicy and fairly constant climb that makes an immediate impression. After the start in the village, the percentages rise quickly and stay around 9-10％ for a long time, making it really a climb to dose well. The road is fairly straight but nicely situated, with little traffic and nice views of the valley. That makes it a lot more pleasant than many other straight Ardennes climbs.
Pittige en vrij constante klim die meteen indruk maakt. Na het begin in het dorp lopen de percentages snel op en blijven ze lange tijd rond de 9-10％, waardoor het echt een klim is om goed te doseren. De weg is vrij recht maar wel mooi gelegen, met weinig verkeer en mooie uitzichten over de vallei. Dat maakt hem een stuk aangenamer dan veel andere rechte Ardennenklimmen.

One of the toughest climbs we did during the Ardennes holiday. We did this one right after the col du rideux and it was much harder.
Één van de lastigste klimmen die we tijdens de Ardennen vakantie gedaan hebben. We deden deze vlak na de col du rideux en deze was veel lastiger.
The coast is detailed in the Cotacol encyclopaedia, at no. 350. It is one of the favourites of the encyclopaedia's authors, and deservedly so. It has everything going for it: the setting and tranquillity, the relative length... and the steepness of the gradient throughout. Many cyclists make the mistake of attacking it at full speed and are forced to downshift afterwards.
It also features systematically in the programme of the Vélomédiane-Claude Criquielion, the Chouffe Classic and (at least this year, 2025) in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Challenge.

Good road surface, nice with the curve at the beginning. After that it runs pretty straight and steep uphill. It runs pretty evenly steep uphill so you can keep your cadence pretty well.
Goed wegdek, leuk met de bocht in het begin. Daarna loopt het vrij recht en steil omhoog. Het loop vrij gelijkmatig steil omhoog dus je kan wel goed je kadans houden.
Still quite a bit steeper in the first 500m than indicated here. I think there is a traffic sign with 15％ at the start. First very steep between the houses in the flat sun, then fortunately some shelter from the trees. The spur can be disappointing if you already have some climbing kilometres in your legs.
Toch wel heel wat steiler in de eerste 500m dan hier aangegeven staat. Ik denk dat er een verkeersbord met 15％ aan de start staat. Eerst heel steil tussen de huizen in de vlakke zon, daarna gelukkig wat beschutting door de bomen. De uitloper kan tegenvallen als je al wat klimkilometers in de benen hebt.
For me the most beautiful climb in the wider area, together with the Col du Rideux - Nord a beautiful tandem.

Climbed in the wake of the Col du Rideux, I prefer this one 100 times over: good surface, little traffic and a lovely view of the valley on the right. An average length for the Ardennes, the climb is fairly straight and regular, but the gradients are definitely there! A must-do if you enjoy a challenge!
Grimpé dans la foulée du col du Rideux, je préfère celui-ci, bon revêtement, peu de circulation et jolie vue sur la vallée à droite. D'une longueur moyenne pour les Ardennes, ascension assez rectiligne et régulière mais les pourcentages sont bien là! A découvrir si vous appréciez les défis!
Nice climb, personally I prefer it to the Col de Haussire which, by the way, is by no means more difficult because of its descending part midway...

Mooie klim, maar wel een pittig ding. Continu vrij steil, maar nooit te steil. Met een gelijkmatig tempo kom je er wel.
Mooie omgeving om in te fietsen op een rustige weg met weinig verkeer en behoorlijk asfalt. Een aanrader deze!

Voor zij die denken: "Roche-à-Frêne, nog nooit van gehoord, dus het zal wel meevallen", pas toch maar op. Deze valt lelijk tegen. Het profiel geeft mooi aan hoe de klim in elkaar zit: altijd ongeveer even steil, maar de percentages zijn wel hoog. Eenmaal je het dorpje door bent, begint dat percentage toch al te wegen. Kies in het begin niet te klein, want je zou je pijnstiller wel eens kunnen nodig hebben naar het einde toe.
It remains a beautiful climb, already done a few times with the Vélomedianne, where it is one of the sharper ones.

Despite the fact that the road surface is pretty straight up, this is a nice climb. The road surface is good, the percentages even and it is also very quiet. The Roche a frene is also a real col, judging by the sign on top.
Ondanks dat het wegdek vrij recht omhoog loopt is dit een mooie klim. Het wegdek is goed, de percentages gelijkmatig en het is ook erg rustig. Daarnaast ook mooie uitzichten, en de Roche a frene is ook nog eens een echte col getuige het bord bovenop.
Very nice steady climb. The road works are over, the road surface is fine. Don't forget to admire the valley on your left while climbing. Very nice panorama. Followed by a nice descent (via Fays to Deux-Rys)
Hele mooie gelijkmatige klim. De wegenwerken zijn afgelopen, het wegdek is prima. Vergeet ook vooral niet tijdens het klimmen de vallei aan je linkerzijde te bewonderen. Heel mooi panorama. Gevolgd door een leuke afdaling (via Fays naar Deux-Rys)

What Guy says is absolutely right: the road works are spoiling the experience. However, I kept on riding and the thick gravel (which is nicely pressed down on some parts, but sometimes not at all) make the climbing a real hell ride. For lovers of gravel a top slope! (And doable with Schwalbe Durano Plus as well).
Wat Guy zegt, klopt als een bus: de wegenwerken strooien roet in het eten. Ik ben echter blijven rijden en de dikke kiezel (die op sommige stukken mooi aangedrukt liggen, maar soms ook helemaal niet) maken het klimwerk tot een echte helletocht. Voor de liefhebbers van graveltochten een tophelling! (En met Schwalbe Durano Plus ook te doen dus.)

July 2017: road works: after a few hundred metres the road surface was completely broken up and strewn with thick stones. Consequence: on foot to the next village, no more cycling possible.
Prachtig klim, maar behoorlijk pittig ( blijft steil tot de top ). Zéér rustige omgeving, weinig verkeer.
Juli 2017: wegenwerken: na een paar honderd meter wegdek volledig opengebroken en bezaaid met dikke keien. Gevolg: te voet verder tot aan het volgend dorpje, geen fietsen meer mogelijk.
It's a nice climb to take after the Col du Rideux-Nord. You have two climbs right after each other. Magnificent surroundings!
Deze klim kun je mooi pakken na de Col du Rideux-Nord. Heb je twee toppers vlak na elkaar. Schitterende omgeving!
