The climbs from the Gade Valley towards Gaddesden Row are all quite different in character. Red Lion Lane is possibly the most interesting, as it has a varied gradient and some bends on the way up, and the upper parts past woodland are quite scenic. Lower down you're between high hedges, so overall there's limited scenic value. Lower down you're between high hedges, so overall there's limited scenic value. Apart from Pedley Hill, Red Lion Lane has the best road surface, with reasonable tarmac and limited debris in the centre of the road. This is probably because it's the most used by traffic, but the traffic is still pretty light. This climb links well with the descents from Berkhamsted / Potten End, and there's no real reason to go and find a different one. Generally, you're either linking via this route or you're linking via Hudnall and Pedley Hill. Both are good routes.
