Climbed from the turnoff to Castro de Filabres. The climb goes up gradually until just before Velefique. Then you see a sign that warns you that the climb really starts now. From here, this irregular climb points straight to the sky. After about 5 km the road flattens considerably to 5-7% and follows a set of hairpin bends giving you spectacular views of the Tabernas desert. At the back, you descend towards Bacares under the watchful eye of a stargazer on the Calar Alto. After that you can ride over the Venta Luisa (with a side trip to Calar Alto), completing a 100 km round trip with almost 3000 hm.

This climb is unique in Europe because of its start in the desert, while on the upper flanks of the climb you also get fantastic views over this desert. By the little traffic and the, at first sight, abandoned houses, you really get a feeling of desolation. Spectacular!

Tips:
1. It is so hot here in the summer that the caterpillars burn their legs on the asphalt. I left Gergal with two water bottles and rode on to Bacares in one go, but this is only possible early in the morning and when you are used to the heat. Water is available in the villages, but not directly on the road.
2. The Filabres, Velefique and Venta Luisa are all in the Vuelta this year (2021).
