One hell of a ride! Not a moment's respite on 3/4 of the pass. Nothing but 9-10%. However, the climb takes place in the middle of the trees and sheltered from the sun and it's rather pleasant. Thanks to this pass, I'm going to change my derailleur because 34/27 just won't do.... read more

A very nice, steady climb. The road is brand new and there is very little traffic.

Before I go into detail about the ascent, you should know that every year at the same time, the world-famous site of St Hilaire on the Plateau des Petites Roches hosts one of the world's largest free-flight events over 6 days (from Tuesday to Sunday) and that the access road via the Terrace is a one-way street going downhill on the weekend of the event to allow the thousands of vehicles parked on the plateau to be evacuated.

Climbed on Thursday 19 September 2024 with Éric, the ascent from the Terrasse seemed much more complicated than the Climbfinder profile suggests, for good reason the average gradient for the first 7 kilometres is indeed 9.1% on average but with many passages well over 10%.
The start is thunderous with 12-13% in places, few viewpoints, quite a few passages in the shade even when the sun is at its zenith, after passing this 7km stretch, you're on the Petites Roches plateau and the remaining kilometres to St Hilaire have nothing to do with those behind you.
From the top there's a magnificent view of the Beldonne peaks just opposite.
Traffic is moderate, just be sure to avoid the Coupe Icare period.
You can return to the valley either by retracing your steps and then climbing to the Col de Marcieu, after which there are many possibilities, or by pushing on to St Pancrasse and then descending to St Nazaire Les Eymes (route du col du Coq).
Happy hiking

Bonne Rando

Not so easy pass: you have to do the 7 km at full speed and you can feel it going by...fortunately, after that it's a laugh!
