Did the entire climb from Le trayas. The road surface is not super-smooth but doable even for a 7.6-kg carbon racer (Jan Janssen Blade). Views are great. At the T junction I turned left where the route here indicates to the right. No matter, you end up on the same plateau. Then I cycled on to the real Pic, in principle forbidden but I couldn't resist. Careful though because this part is not top notch in terms of pavement. Nevertheless, I managed to cycle up at 13 km per hour. Didn't ha... read more

Not a fantastic road surface, but doable. Route is insanely beautiful. In summer, it's the heat that will kill you rather than the gradients. No reason to cycle very fast here, the area is far too beautiful for that. Absolutely recommended. Continuing on to the Pic de l'Ours on a road bike seems unwise to me.

Route is waanzinnig mooi.

Dun_Jay has described it well but perhaps for clarification: the last stretch from (the car park of) Col de Notre-Dame to Pic de l'Ours is a footpath, suitable for MTB/VTT, but not for road bikes.

Beautiful climb, though very bad road surface in places and large stones on the road. The first time I rode up it I had 2x punctures. The 3 times after that I had no more punctures, just be careful where you ride. The route up is partly one-way, and wonderfully quiet. You can go up by road bike, but you will have to turn around at the top because there is no tarmac road on the other side. You do, however, partly ride down another (again one-way) road. Be very careful here, as the road surface is very bad!

You cycle up to a car park, steer sharply left there and manoeuvre under the fence. Then you can cycle a bit further up to the weather station and to the real summit of the Pic de l'Ours. At the top, you have beautiful views and the climb is well worth it!
