The climb from Boleto to the Colma di Valpiana or Pian della Sella is the natural continuation of the one from Pella (on Lake Orta) up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, an incredible little church built on a rocky spur high above Alzo that offers an incredible panorama over the lake from Omegna to Gozzano and on clear days over the Po Valley as far as the Apennines and Milan. At the fork in the road that leads to the Sanctuary, turn right leaving a wash-house that also offers water supplies and climb steeply to the fork in the road that climbs from Boleto. In the first 2.5 km there are the most difficult stretches with gradients up to 19% at the Moon Mountains (strange clay formations emerging from the vegetation and easily recognisable. Once past the hellish section, the gradient softens a great deal and there are even a couple of descents (the second also very steep) before bouncing back up to the summit at 850m above sea level. The last section is immersed in the forest, with a stream to the right. The road is in sufficient condition and can be tackled on a mountain bike, although it is a little narrow, but the traffic is practically non-existent except for the vans that take downhill riders to Pogno or S. Maurizio d'Opaglio.
