In theory this climb should make a great side excursion to a ride through the Ogwen Valley. It's a steep, challenging, route that goes straight up the mountainside on a traffic-free gated track up to the Ffynnon Llugwy reservoir. The views back across the valley to Tryfan and the Glyders are magnificent. HOWEVER aside from the gated access off the A5 there are 4 further gates on the climb. When I rode the route in August 25 every one these gates was closed as there were sheep around. ... read more

It made for a very tedious climb! On the plus side the steepest section of the climb lay between gates 2-3 so that at least can be climbed without getting off the bike. Strava segment = 0.75km / 116m av.15.4% (inc. around 200m at 20+%). The track is also covered with sheep poo - watch out for wheelspin. It's possible you may be lucky with the gates being open if the sheep are off the mountain. Failing that, as a pure climbing test, the section between gates 2-3 is worth the detour off the A5. I've rated the climb a rather generous ** but if the gates are open it's worth ****
