Unlike the graded climb on the A5 all the action on this route happens at the end. The ride along the valley floor is a real delight but then the road (a narrow singletrack) rears up steeply to climb the headwall of the valley up to Llyn Ogwen. It's a magnificent climb, steep throughout but the hardest inclines are relatively short-lived. There is hardly any traffic and you're more likely to come across walkers in the road rather than vehicles. The surface is a bit broken up in places but easily rideable on a road bike. The climb finishes at Ogwen Cottage where there are toilets and a snack bar. After that you're bacck on the A5 again.
