The climb is very much gentle, there aren't any major gradients here but the road is fairly peaceful and the panoramas are spectacular. I was able to do this on Christmas Eve on a spectacular winter days, with the Alps visible in the distance behind me.
The road surface is not perfect but I had no problem descending even in winter.
