A marvellous ascent! The Surselva is otherwise poor in tarmac minor roads and the route from Valendas via Dutjen to Sevgein is one of the few exceptions. The gradient is steep but very even at 8-11% throughout. The tarmac is very good and only the last kilometre is a good agricultural road. The information on Strava "unpaved road" is not correct. The descent to Sevgein has a rough and not very good road surface in the upper part, but from Rien onwards the road has an almost perfect surface again. The views of the Rhine Valley and the Flimserstein are fantastic and the road is almost traffic-free. An absolute "must" for mountain goats in this region. If you want to prolong the agony a little longer, you can start the ascent down by the Rhine at Valendas railway station. Then it's 910 metres over 10 km.

Beautiful, hidden gem of a climb. Strava suggested this was going to be gravel in points however the Road surface was bowling green smooth for the first 6k of the ascent and only in the final couple of hundred meters did it turn into a farm track. On a hot August day I was very grateful for the water trough in the farm at 1,500m elevation just before the final kicker to the top of the climb. The whole climb I probably saw 1 car, 4 mountain bikers and endless beautiful views back down into the valley.

Initially the road surface on the descent to Ríein was more broken up and had some loose gravel at points (I’m certainly not the best descender and was fine on my road bike) and then suddenly you’re back on smooth tarmac and empty roads and you could almost convince yourself you’re flying out front in the Tour de France!

Beautiful climb, often do a lap of this from Valendas to Dutjen. Rarely traffic or 1 tractor with in Dutjen at farmer's self-service coffee, cake etc with pot to pay. Great descent with sublime views of mountain peaks. Absolutely recommended. Unknown, secret climb. Close to Oberalp pass and other nice famous cols in the region but very many cars and motorbikes there. Dutjen round as good as private, don't tell :), lovely!
