A tough but manageable climb after the first food stop on the Fred Whitton - 34 cassette helps (I may mention this a few times on these reviews 🤭)
Our holiday home was in the descent of this slope, so on a beautiful August evening, I drove a loop over Honister Pass via Lake Buttermere and finally over this slope. An altogether short route that I can recommend to anyone. The scenery is of overwhelming beauty and the waterfall at the top completes it. At the time I drove there (approx half past 7 'pm) there was hardly any traffic. In terms of difficulty, I found this slope quite doable, at least compared to the dreadful Honister Pass. Even with a rattling Brompton with 6 vitessen, I didn't run into trouble anywhere here. Or has that Honister also affected my memory? Because surely I must have felt that passage at 18%.
One of THE must-do climbs of the lakes.
A key climb on the Fred Whitton route, it’s just wonderful; dramatic, really hard in places and just wild enough to keep you on your toes, you can never tell what kind of climb you’re getting into from day to day.
Road surface is so-so but it’s not horrendous. The final steep pitch to the top is excruciating if you’ve dug too deep, it’s very steep.
The descent over the back is incredible and definitely worth the pain
