100% a must-do! We tackled this on the day we were traveling between Switzerland and Austria. It’s still fun to be able to check off Liechtenstein’s toughest climb. The start is manageable through the forest, but after a few kilometers you reach an open meadow where a few steep hairpin turns give you a taste of the wall ahead. There, you turn left onto a small road (just before the main road goes through the big tunnel). This path immediately climbs extremely steeply, at around 20%. After th... read more

After the first hairpin turn, it becomes a bit more manageable for a while, until you face another steep 20% climb just before the descent. This is quickly followed by the beautiful little tunnel and the technical descent back to the main road toward Malbun. This final section is like a jump run; it gets steeper and steeper along a wide road, a stark contrast to all the beauty you’ve experienced up to this point. The finish line is at the end of the ski village; 100 meters further on, you’ll find a water fountain. You can also climb another kilometer until the paved path ends, but whether you’ll still feel like it after this ordeal…

100% must-do!

Amazing climb. This climb has it all. Meadows, villages, a few cobbled corners, many steep hairpins and breathtaking views. It feels like you can see all of Liechtenstein from this climb, and it is mostly true. The views are amazing and the climb itself is also really beautiful. There are a few cobbled corners near the Castle of Vaduz, but the cobbles are great so it is not much of a hindrace, only a way to make the climb even better.
As can be seen on the profile, the climb is steep all the way (the downhill section is also double digits), especially towards Rotenboden and on the incredibly steep Kulmstraße, which I have reviewed in greater detail here: https://climbfinder.com/en/climbs/kulmstrasse
The tarmac is great, except on Kulmstraße and the following downhill section. I encountered only a few cars (weekend in august), and on the road through Rotenboden the cars have one-way traffic towards you which is also nice.
This climb is definitely a must-do! Not only if you are in the area, if you like climbs or views you have to do this.
