Whilst the road surface is tarmac the texture is annoyingly coarse so progress is not as smooth as you'd wish given the gradient. There is also a lot of grit down the centre line of the road which makes crossing from side to side to pick up smoother tarmac a bit of a pain. All that said it is still a good climb and has a nice finish where the gradient eases and the road enters open countryside.
