The ascent to Los Tilos, also known as Cascada de los Tilos. Up here is the famous waterfall that every holidaymaker on La Palma will visit at some point. The climb to the really beautiful cul-de-sac, where you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle, is anything but easy to cycle. It is about 3 kilometres uphill with a total ascent of 250 metres. (8.4 per cent gradient on average) There are three really steep ramps, each 300 metres long.
The tarmac is always in good condition, the volume of traffic depends somewhat on the time of day. In the morning until lunchtime, it is somewhat heavier than in the afternoon due to the hikers on their way to the car park.
If you are approaching from Santa Cruz, you will see the sign "Los Tilos," before the world-famous bridge of Los Sauces, which will let you turn into the right road. If you are coming from Los Sauces and are therefore driving over the bridge, you have to turn right immediately after the bridge. After turning, you will find yourself in a one-way street, so you don't have to expect any oncoming traffic when you plunge down the small descent that follows. If you have the time and inclination, it's worth stopping here. Here you can get a marvellous view of the Los Sauces bridge. As soon as you reach the lowest point, you have to turn left again towards Los Tilos. This is where the actual ascent begins.
