It's true to say that there's no way out of Chesham without going up some kind of hill. The way out along the Chess valley might seem like the one way out that doesn't go up a hill, but then you get to the Chenies climb (i.e. this one, aka Latimer Road). There's no road that continues along the river. But it's quite a nice climb. Firstly a straightish ramp up towards the bend, and from higher up, just before the bend, you can get a good view down the valley. Then you round the bend and head up through tree towards the village, bending round to the left before finally topping out. The village green is nice, as you pass by. It's steep enough, but it's one of those where you want to stay in the big ring and have to work quite hard for that.
Just to say, there is only only one Chenies, slightly confusingly. There's no group of villages with e.g. Little Chenie and Great Chenie, it's just Chenies (pronounced Chainies).
