During my hiking & biking holiday in Bagnères de Luchon I got to know Hospice de France in two ways. First of all as a starting point for a firm climb to the rocky crevice of Port de Vénasque (2444m), which is also the border with Spain. But also as end point of a steep climb by bike starting in Luchon. At first you cycle on the same route towards the well known small ski resort Superbagnères which you leave after about 5km to go steeply uphill into the side valley formed by the Pique river... read more

Good road with little traffic, quite a few flats on the first part of the climb and many sections over 10% (rather 15) making the climb rather irregular. Very pleasant scenery with several waterfalls and lots of vegetation , I highly recommend for a great experience and a sporting challenge.

A very nice wild and natural climb from the separation of the road with Superbagnères. Some waterfalls, the ascent being in the state forest of Luchon.
The last 3 kilometres are very difficult with, in my opinion, percentages well above 10%

At first you cycle on the same route towards the well known small ski resort Superbagnères which you leave after about 5km to go steeply uphill into the side valley formed by the Pique river. The whole climb winds up through the green forest (Foret National) and you pass a beautiful viewpoint on the Superbagnères. The final kilometres are a long steep wall of +10% to end on the parking lot of the refuge (supply) with a view on the high mountains that form the border between France and Spain. Spontaneous cheers and applause from hikers were all mine. I guess cyclists were a rarity there.

Tip: Because this is a popular starting point for mountain hikers, it is advisable to only cycle from 10 am onwards because by then most cars are already on the narrow road to the top. From late afternoon onwards you will of course have the descending traffic of returning hikers after their high mountain trip.

Sporting challenge (especially the end) that you should definitely take on. This is an unknown top climb!
