Gravel Path is a tough one, and there are easier ways out of Berkhamsted on the north side of the town, like New Road, up from the castle. However Gravel Path is a good test if you're looking for one, and it saves you going through the centre of Berko, as well. I would've given it 3 stars if it had been less urban, but it passes through houses all the way up. But we're here for the gradient, right? and Gravel Path delivers that. You cross over the canal and railway line early on. The railway crossing is single file traffic and you have the right of way when going up. The cars will stop for you. The road surface above this is terrible, although on the whole it's ok. Once you're over the railway bridge the surroundings become more pleasant, with trees and grassy banks, and the houses have gardens, it's not like they face hard on the road, and there are no parked cars. So it's steep but pleasantish, and worthy of being the way you choose to leave Berko - although there are better options a little way out of town to the east that I have yet to submit.
