the easiest of the slopes but still super super hard
This side of the Grand Colombier is surprisingly quiet. I rode the climb on.a Wednesday afternoon on 31 July and there was not a chicken on the road. The gradients are quite steep at times, even above 10% in the last two kilometres. The road surface is fine. The views at the top towards the valley and the lake are eye-opening and is a great reward. Bucket list work this, so five stars. Easy.
Easy.
The Grand Colombier is a must-see before you die for all passionate cyclists. It's.the.Mecca.of cycling. You have slopes that are found in very few places, 4 sides with each one its particularity. If you climb by Anglefort no pass will frighten you it is also true by virieu the small one so raid on 1.5km. It's a pass I do every week and it's a drug, one side calls for a second...etc. See you soon on the slopes of the G.C.
Passes in stages so the average % is to be taken with distance. There is a resting place every 3kms or so to recharge the batteries that the rest of the slope has well diminished. When it's uphill it's between 9 and 10.5% but the climb isn't very long which makes it a nice training hill. For a large dovecote it's a hump that it's possible to do regularly in training unlike the one at Virieu de le petit or Anglefort which makes you go very less in the effort against yourself. Shady wilderness with a small river. The atmosphere changes when you come out of the woods, but the road is deserted and there's nothing rural about the approach. Everything I love about cycling. Watch out for the Canadian barriers. The.summit.of.the.pass.in.good.weather.offers.a.view.of.high.alpine.peaks.(mt blanc).and.lakes. You can't be a cyclist and die without having done one of the faces. I would put Culoz on the 2nd side, Anglefort on the 3rd and Virieu le Petit on the 4th. Culoz is the most beautiful for the view.
