A rather long and difficult first-class climb almost entirely in a beautiful Apennine forest. The climb starts out immediately hard for the first two kilometres, passing through the lovely village of Calenzano. It then flattens out for a few kilometres with a portion that alternates between steeper and easier sections and even some very short descents. Then just before the hamlet of Melo, the climb becomes hard again and has a section of about 600 m that is very hard, always above 10% and portions at 15°. After crossing Melo, there is an easier portion followed by about 4 km that are fairly hard and constant and entirely in a beautiful fresh beech forest. Finale with easier gradients but where you arrive sorely tried by a climb of about 15 km and almost 1000 m of altitude gain.
An ideal climb for summer because it is almost entirely in the shade. I tackled this climb on a midweek day in mid-June, encountering practically two or three cars in an hour of climbing. The only negative note is the road surface, which is very ruined in places and therefore poses great difficulty on the descent; hopefully it will be redone soon, because the climb deserves it.
