The Croce Nera taken from the Fornace locality is in fact an alternative way to climb to the San Donato hermitage without starting from Barbarano. After a quiet initial stretch, the road becomes interesting when you take the fork to Via Commenda, a kilometre of fairly narrow street between old houses with numerous ups and downs. Via Commenda leads into Via Mandolare, right at the hairpin bend at 15% which is the toughest part of the climb. Beyond this step, the route continues with varying but no more aggressive gradients to the summit, with splendid views of the plain below reaching as far as the Euganean Hills.
The asphalt is generally very good, the traffic very limited (just a few cars in Via Mandolare). Downhill you can have fun until the fork, because then Via Commenda and Via Croce Nera are too narrow to think about speed.
All in all, a nice climb, even if it is a little difficult to find the starting point (which is in the nothingness of the Fornace locality).
