I tackled this climb after the ups and downs at Colle dell'Agnello and suffered it so much. The length and average gradient do not give you a chance if you face it already fatigued. I tackled this climb after the ups and downs at Colle dell'Agnello and suffered it so much. The length and average gradient do not give you a chance if you face it already fatigued. Unfortunately, unlike what we could see during the ascent to Colle dell'Agnello, the weather was not perfect, with some cloudiness that prevented us from enjoying the view of Sampeyre and in the background the Alps and Monviso, and despite the less than perfect weather conditions, I also suffered from the heat (I tackled it in mid-July in the middle hours - 12:30-16:00) and the heat (apart from the section over 2000 m asl) was felt, although up to almost 2000 m one remains quite protected by the sun's exposure. A couple of critical issues: one is the condition of the road surface (especially if it also has to be tackled downhill) and the other is the almost total absence of drinking fountains along the route; I found one after 10 km of ascent near a small bridge on the left as we climbed represented by a mere plastic tube, which saved me and allowed me to rehydrate with fresh water. The scenery at the top is not as grand as l'Lamb and the traffic is fairly light if not nonexistent. Absolutely not to be underestimated ascent if you tackle it in combo with the Agnello or other passes in the area.

We did this climb after col d'agnelle. Nice to climb. Bad to descend due to poor quality road. But at the top you really do have 360-degree views. Worth doing though.

Climb straight out of Sampeyre, through the shady forest then then Alpine meadows. In places the coarse chip potholed/cracked surface demands attention, especially when descending.

Beautiful climb in Piedmont, following fairly soon after the Agnel Pass. During the first part, the forest gives enough shelter from the scorching sun. The second part has some more open sections. Despite the varying steep percentages and the high average, it was easy to find a suitable pace and thus the climb felt like a runner to me.

Contrary to other reports, I found the tarmac generally top-notch. Much of the road has brand new asphalt, so presumably this has been worked on in the past year. Of course during the descent you still have to be careful, as the good stretches are also regularly interspersed with some holes and cracks.

You imagine yourself alone in the world at this col. Heavy, but very beautiful climb through a deserted landscape. Unfortunately, little visibility at the top due to dense fog.
