On 23/08/2020, after the popular climb from Susa, I also cycled up the other side of the Colle delle Finestre. Signposted to Balboutt/Pian dell'Alpe, the start of the climb is indicated at the junction of the main road Sestriere-Pinerolo. Compared to the most discussed and described other side, the south side is obviously less steep, shorter, with fewer hairpins and no off road part, but good tarmac with even a slight downhill and with two food and beverage outlets on the way. This side allows you to climb this legendary pass on a tarmac road.
Nothing particularly difficult, but contrary to previous comments, I found the gradient uneven and the surface just as uneven: good most of the time, but mediocre in places. It's not a problem on the way up, but you have to be careful on the way down.
Nonetheless, the bucolic mountain setting is utterly charming and well worth the diversions.

Nice climb through the mountain pastures with lots of free roaming sheep and tarps.
Steady, rolling climb, correct tarmac throughout, almost no traffic

On 23/08/2020, after the popular climb from Susa, I also cycled up the other side of the Colle delle Finestre.
Signposted to Balboutt/Pian dell'Alpe, the start of the climb is indicated at the junction of the main road Sestriere-Pinerolo.
Compared to the most discussed and described other side, the south side is obviously less steep, shorter, with fewer hairpins and no off road part, but good tarmac with even a slight downhill and with two food and beverage outlets on the way.
Nevertheless, this climb is absolutely worth the effort of cycling through the open panoramic mountain landscape, because you are not cycling through the Parco Naturale Orsiera Rocciavrè for nothing and the top remains a magical place for cycling.
