Long climb when all sections are considered. It is definitely worth doing this side as everyone will have done the other side 😉
The normal climb to Rates is fine. You encounter mostly cyclists and little car traffic. Once across the car park at the summit, you start the super rates, the 3 steep final kilometres. This is a narrow goat track. Curiously, I encountered 3 autos on this stretch. Passing is almost impossible so dismounting was necessary. Otherwise it is really hard work on this last part, although there are occasional small stretches to recover somewhat. At the top, the views are magnificent.
De normale klim naar de Rates is prima te doen. Je komt voornamelijk fietsers tegen en weinig autoverkeer. Eenmaal de parkeerplaats over op de top begin je aan de super rates, de 3 stijle slot kilometers. Dit is een smal geitenpad. Merkwaardig genoeg kwam ik 3 autos op dit stuk. Passeren is vrijwel niet mogelijk dus afstappen was nodig. Verder is het echt afzien op dit laatste deel, wel af en toe klein stukjes om enigszins te herstellen. Boven heb je schitterend uitzicht.

Ridden in May 2023 from Benidorm. Very muggy day so missed out on alot of the scenery! Pretty quiet roads and decent tarmac to spin on. Not the hardest of climbs but can be done at a leisurely pace if required. Nice cafe & mini mart to stop at in parcent. Took the road around to el masserof then back towards Calpe.
Finally you leave the busy roads and start the ascent at Calossa d'el Sarria. Unfortunately, a week ago (15 April 2024), a large piece of forest (900ha) on the south side of Coll de Rates burned down. The little tent where the goat trail to the top starts (and the village just a bit lower down) were miraculously spared.

Het tentje waar het geitenpad naar boven begint (en het dorpje net iets lager gelegen) zijn wonderbaarlijk bespaard gebleven.
Nice ride. Left from Calpé via the fairly busy lane (N332) towards Altea. This one is (I thought) safe to drive, but perhaps best used on a Sunday. The climb to Tarbena was breathtakingly beautiful at times. From there it was a bit of a descent to the top of the Col de Rates. In the local restaurant, you can catch your breath and enjoy not only the beautiful and peaceful landscape, but also the altitude you have conquered. From the Col de Rates it is downhill on a nice wide road towards Xalo and the N332.
Mooie rit. Vertrokken vanuit Calpé via de vrij drukke baan (N332) richting Altea. Deze is (vond ik) veilig rijden, maar misschien best op een zondag gebruiken. De klim naar Tarbena was soms adembenemend prachtig. Vandaar was het ietwat dalen om terug af te zien tot aan de top van de Col de Rates. In de plaatselijke horecazaak kan je even op adem komen en genieten van niet alleen het mooie en rustgevende landschap, maar ook kijken welke hoogte je hebt overwonnen. Van de Col de Rates is het afdalen via een mooie brede weg richting Xalo en de N332
Beautiful climb in the region of Alicante. From Bolulla, the road goes up gradually towards Tarbena. On the way there are almost no cars and the only traffic in January are professional cyclists who have their training camp here. From Tarbena the road first goes down and then slightly up to the Coll de Rates. Here you can turn left after the restaurant and drive over the parking lot to the goat path which will bring you to the top. From then on it is a lot of hard work. Prachtige beklimming in de regio Alicante. Vanuit Bolulla gaat de weg geleidelijk omhoog richting Tarbena. Onderweg zijn er bijna geen auto's en het enige verkeer in januari zijn profwielrenners die hier hun trainingskamp hebben. Vanuit Tarbena gaat de weg eerst een stuk omlaag om vervolgens lichtelijk omhoog naar de Coll de Rates. Hier kan je linksaf na het restaurant en zo rijd je over de parkeerplaats naar het geitenpad wat je tot de top gaat brengen. Vanaf dan is het een en al afzien. De weg is slecht en smal maar het is het 100％ waard. Het uitzicht bovenop is dan ook bijna 360 graden.
