As mentioned in the other comments, you have to prepare yourself psychologically for the steep gradients at the end of the climb!

This is the first pass on this side of the Cévennes that I've done since 2006, when the VCCA and I came to St Jean for our start-of-season training camp. Yesterday I went back over a few roads that we'd taken in the car. To get to the Col du Lac, my initial idea was to climb the small pass between Sumène and the Nationale, but I got a bit carried away and so I'I don't know if it's the Livradois walls the day before, with their 15-18% percentages climbed in high heat (36-37 at times) or if it's the 3hr30min drive + the ambient 32, but it was a hell of a climb and yet I'm light and used to it, but from the moment I got to the crossroads, the first two climbs of the day were the same; The first two km are a little false flat, swallowed at 25, but after the little bridge, you attack straight away on the 11-12 at times, then after 800m on the flat, it picks up again a little, until you reach the long central flat before arriving at Sournalou, where it's expensive right to the end, personally I cut out at the last hairpin because I was too worn out from the day before, but I'd do the whole thing on Sunday.

Very nice Cévennes climb, with a beautiful panorama at the top, but being from the Cévennes I'm certainly not objective!
Steep before and after the Sounalou traverse, which allows you to get your head back in the game.

Very nice little pass ideal for testing yourself on the big gradients and for admiring the beautiful panorama at the top.
The climb takes place in three stages, the first few kms are on strong percentages in the chestnut tree, then comes a flat area at 4-5% before leading to a much more pastoral environment, it's then a gradual ascent of the slope to finish on a last km above 10 %.
