I climbed this Col des Montets (from the Swiss border) on June 19 during the heat wave. This side of the pass is cooler and definitely less strenuous than the French side. There’s more shade here. The first 2 km are tough, but after that it’s not too bad, with just a short, steep climb to the pass. There’s a new visitor center there, and to the left of the entrance (even when the center is closed), there’s a spring in the wall with cool, clear, drinkable water. It’s worth the detour. ... read more

This slope is quite pleasant, with plenty of shade. Much less traffic than via Les Praz. The first few kilometres have some nice gradients, then it gets easier as you pass through the villages, and finally it gets more demanding again before the summit. Magnificent views at the finish. It's primarily a route back to Chamonix from Switzerland, but it's still a nice one.

Beautiful climb that doesn't make you immediately realise this is France. Climbing is easy as it never gets really steep. Traffic is not too bad, I would expect more from Switzerland. The road is nice and direct and brings you into chamonix.

Nothing amazing about this climb... I was only doing this to get back to Chamonix. But the road surface is really good, and the traffic pretty light, compared to the very busy other side of Montets. Nice to climb in amongst the trees and the view over the tops and into Chamonix are great.

On it's own, I wouldn't recommend, but getting over to do Barrage d'Emosson(from Chamonix earlier that day) and the descent on the other side back to Chamonix are pretty damn good and make it worth the trip (assuming you're in Chamonix).

Considerably better half of the Col des Montets. Quieter, more charming and meanders nicely there the pass to the top. It doesn't get really steep, so a nice offshoot after climbing more serious climbs in the area.

Cycled this one on the way back from the Barrage d'Emosson towards Chamonix. A lot quieter on the road than during the climb from the other side, nice start through the woods, while you follow L'Eau Noire. At a certain point after a right turn you enter Vallorcine, here are some intersections, but it is very quiet so you can actually cycle on in one go. After Vallorcine the road meanders quietly through a wider valley with a few farms and green meadows. The closer you get to the top, the narrower the valley, the steeper the road gets. It doesn't get really steep though, because soon you reach the lake on the top, and the descent towards Chamonix can begin.
