This is in large part because of how beautiful and varied the route is. You start the climb by going off the D64 main road, and then instantly you climb past fields with abricot trees with a clear view to the hill ridge rising up ahead of you. After a false flat section, you come to a small charming village with some switchbacks, a maire office, and most importantly a cold water tap at the church. I al... read more

I really adore this side up the Col de Soubeyrand, and it is the side I most often go up from. This is in large part because of how beautiful and varied the route is. After a false flat section, you come to a small charming village with some switchbacks, a maire office, and most importantly a cold water tap at the church. I always fill up the bottles here and enjoy the peace and scenery, knowing that what awaits next is another great piece of road with excellent views into the Ennuyé Valley. The last 3 kilometers are probably the hardest, as you go past the junction and meets up with the route from Saint Jalle. At around 7%, so nothing too challenging though and you are soon at the top of the col, which unfortunately is located in an area shield by trees. The views from the top are therefore non-existent.
Overall, a great climb in the area, and definitely the one to choose if you're looking for good views and a fairly easy ride. If you want something more challenging, the two other sides to the col are the way to go.
Quite a nice climb from this side of the col de Soubeyrand. It is the least difficult climb of this side. The approach from the D64 is quiet the first km. Just before you arrive in the village it gets a bit steeper. Once out of the village the climb becomes more irregular and steeper and especially the last kms are the toughest. Because of its length it creeps in my legs with my mountain bike. Also the many curves and no miserable long stretches contribute to the pleasantness of this climb. A narrow very easily accessible road and the beautiful surroundings make it so nice and pleasant, and I didn't encounter a car. The last part from the junction to Le Poet Sigillat are the toughest. A must as so many climbs in the Drome. You see few cyclists here and that is mainly because the roads are too narrow to send the tour caravan through but much more beautiful and pleasant.
I am in love with this area and so is my bike.
