Fairly steep climb at the start, then more rolling over the last 3 km. Wide road with few hairpins. Climb exposed to the wind. Refreshments available at the summit.
Nice fairly steady climb, with small switchbacks towards the end and a 4-5% gradient in the last 2 km. The views are superb with the added bonus of cows and donkeys at the finish. Small restaurant at the top to cool off on a hot day.
A small car park on the right immediately after the roundabout when coming from Foix. The good thing about this starting point is that it puts you in the mood straight away, as the climb is immediately quite steep. The road is in good condition and although it is a little busy, vehicles are cautious and go wide.
The climb is pleasant, with long stretches in the shade and only a few slightly steeper sections. The last three kilometres allow you to pick up the pace again and take real pleasure in arriving at the pass as if the whole climb had been a formality... and as it's often the last impression that counts, that's no mean feat!
Do it again on a clear day, as it was a bit chilly at the top and on the descent on this overcast July day!
