Climb that starts as a thirteen-in-a-dozen with even gradients (6-7%) but then comes the stretch to Saint-Bérain with gradients as high as 20% and you wonder why on earth you embarked on that venture. Once past Saint-Bérain you dive back below double digits and arrive at 1190 metres in an open and often misty landscape. Relatively unknown col but if you are Auvergne by bike definitely a must.
This is a must go for those who like steep climbs. It has an 1km 14.1% in the middle part. This climb has been once in the TdF.there is was classified as 1st category. There are some YouTube of TdF cyclers that went swirling up to decrease the steepness. Bauke Mollema won the stage.
About the climb. The first km are really beautiful. Through rocks climbing up from the river. Afterwards it is through fields. Than the steep couple of km starts. This is partly through forrestie area. Once in the hammock St Berrain it goes up in a moderate climb.
