Great warming up for the Ventoux we did a day later. Nice bit of leg stimulation, nice ride:)

It's a long climb, especially if it's hot, as there's no shade the whole way. It is steady and takes you to Sault by a route other than the Nesque. Not very interesting in the end

A climb that never gets steep, keeps going well. I rode it in March, so no heat, which does make a difference. Landscape is dull, slightly more open than the "forest" of the Ventoux, but never spectacular. Better than the half motorway going from Villes s/Auzon to the col des Abeleilles, though.
Een klim die nooit stiel wordt, goed door blijft lopen. Ik reed hem in maart, dus geen hitte, dat scheelt wel. Landschap is saai, iets meer open dan het "bos" van de Ventoux, maar nooit spectaculair. Wel beter dan de halve autoweg die vanuit Villes s/Auzon naar de col des Abeleilles gaat.

We didn't do the last bit on busy D1, but crossed the D1 and took the old (but good and quiet) road to Sault.

I did this as a descent, towards the Mont Ventoux. I got off the bike twice to put my chain back on, once to pick up my water bottle and once to pick up my bars and gels. I have never experienced this before.
Deze als afdaling gedaan, richting de Mont Ventoux. heel veel hobbels. Ben twee keer afgestapt om mijn ketting er opnieuw op te leggen, een keer om mijn bidon op te rapen en een keer om mijn reepjes en gelletjes op te rapen. Dit heb ik nog nooit mee gemaakt.

Typical bumpy Provencal road despite new coarse asphalt. If you come on the main road to Sault, you turn left but you could also go straight to La Gabelle, you drive on the old road to Sault and is much nicer. You miss the official col then. At the top you can also turn right for the route touristique.

Het eerste stuk heb je niet veel schaduw en is er geen water te krijgen tot je in Sault bent, dus zeker in de zomer bidons vullen.
typisch hobbelig Provençaals wegdek ondanks nieuw grof asfalt. Als je op de grote baan richting Sault komt met je links-af maar je zou ook rechtdoor kunnen gaan naar la Gabelle, je rijdt dan over de oude weg naar Sault en is veel leuker. Je mist dan wel de officiële col. Bovenop kan je overigens ook nog rechtsaf voor de route touristique.

De Col de Notre Dame des Abeilles is een mooie voorbereiding voor een beklimming van de Mont-Ventoux, of een alternatief als de Ventoux gesloten is. Onderweg heb je een mooi uitzicht op de Ventoux.
Echt zwaar is de beklimming niet maar neem veel drinken mee. Je rijdt namelijk voortdurend in de zon.
