Pretty quiet and very peaceful at the top... although that may be because the top in Avoriaz is basically a massive car park, which seems to be empty in the summer. Some great views on the way up, and a few places with trees offering shade on a hot day. Nice to have the Tour de France km markers all the way up as well, although there is not obvious finishing point... the last sign/marker is 1.3km to go, then.... nothing. Bit weird, but obviously doesn't take anyt... read more

Very nice, steady climb. Very doable for most. No irregular, steep pinches, but not easy either!
A fine, winding climb from Morzine, in the shade, with regular but not excessive gradients. The final section is more open, particularly in the last few kilometres with a wider road that makes the finish interminable. Otherwise, the views are beautiful and the climb is interesting.
A col with gentler percentages than the nearby Col de Joux Plane but the views are just a bit nicer. In the first part you look at the beautiful Morzine valley and in the 2nd part you look out on Avoriaz, known for Tour arrivals. If you want, you can continue just after the top of this Col to Avoriaz. At the top you will be rewarded with phenomenal views of Mont de Grange.
My first Alpine climb. Absolutely loved it! Nothing too steep requiring an out-of-saddle effort, but absolutely no flat either. Constant gradient pretty much all the way up to Avoriaz. The switchbacks early in the climb are all in the shade, so it didn't get too hot, but after the switchbacks it was more open and exposed. Once you get to the café at the junction for the descent it's worth the extra 1km of effort to say you've summited Avoriaz. And there's a good viewpoint from the top overlooking the golf course. The road surface was impeccable all the way up. No potholes whatsoever (the English Highways Agency really need to take a leaf out of the French's book). The roads up this way are also wide enough for cars to pass with plenty of room. The descent back down to Lake Montriond was fun, passing through a ski resort and goat village on the way. Lake Montriond is absolutely stunning. I ended my ride there to meet the family. If you wanted to take this route up to Avoriaz, the roads are much narrower and busier, but it gets quiter after the ski resort. I would definitely recommend this climb.
The climb took place at 8am on Tuesday 29 April 2025. As I like to go up quietly without being passed by cars all the time, it was perfect! An accessible climb for a first time in the mountains, and at this time of year the pretty views of the snow-capped peaks help pass the time.
after doing the Col de Joux Plane... take a descent via Morzine ....to start the Col de Joux Verte via Avoriaz.
nice climb , good roads, ..somewhere halfway the descent there's a village with goats on the street :-)
and at the bottom of the descent the lac de Montriond
all surrounded by nice scenery
Personally it was my first big pass and I liked it. The landscape is great but the passage of the cars is quite consequent despite everything. The difficulty level is quite high at the beginning but after the hairpins the rest of the climb is not complicated.
Nice climb on a perfect road! A real bike highway. Steady gradients all the way to the top with countless switchbacks above Morzine.
Really nice climb this. Pretty quiet and very peaceful at the top... although that may be because the top in Avoriaz is basically a massive car park, which seems to be empty in the summer.
Some great views on the way up, and a few places with trees offering shade on a hot day. Nice to have the Tour de France km markers all the way up as well, although there is not obvious finishing point... the last sign/marker is 1.3km to go, then.... nothing. Bit weird, but obviously doesn't take anything away from the climb itself.
Nothing at the top for water or a coffee, but back down the slope a short way is a good cafe - right on the Joux-Vert sign.
Descent down the Joux-verte via the lake is definitely worth it. Great descent, good roads and some lovely views back into Morzine.
Super nice route with good road surface, long climb that gets too steep and you can keep on cycling to the ski village of Avoriaz (before you really are in Avoriaz you have to climb another 2km).
