There are five ways to climb the Col de la Croix de l'Homme Mort. In my opinion, the most interesting route is the one via Bard, both from a sporting point of view and in terms of the scenery. It's a very pleasant climb with very little road traffic. The two alternatives, Margerie-Chantagret and Saint Jean Soleymieux, are also very pleasant with very little traffic. A must if you're in the area. The road has recently been rebuilt, so it's very pleasant but quite busy.

The one I liked least was the one going up from Saint Antheme.
As for the climb from Montbrison, it's quite good too, with superb views over the Forez plain and varied scenery all the way up.
For the latter two, it's where you'll find the most traffic, which remains relatively moderate all the same.
My advice is to take the Bard route up and the Montbrison route down.
