For me, the only routes across Berkhamsted / Northchurch I consider using are Darr's Lane and Chesham Road, depending on whether I'm coming from the B road across the middle of Ashridge, or from the old toll road past Ashridge House. It's a one way street, and this is due to it being very narrow. There are virtually no places where cars can get past you, unless you ride on the pavement (side walk), which I sometimes do. It's a one way street, and this is due to it being very narrow. There are virtually no places where cars can get past you, unless you ride on the pavement (side walk), which I sometimes do. However, it's a good climb, it goes up through a wooded hollow way, and maintains a decent gradient most of the way. Don't let the cars put you off, they're used to waiting behind bikes. There's a good coffee shop near the bottom - Fred and Ginger's.
