The ascent of Via Castello furrows the valley between Villaga (on the left) and Barbarano (on the right) and for the most part consists of a docile, narrow road with easy gradients and asphalt in a fairly damaged condition. At Barbarano, the road begins to climb until it reaches the junction with Via San Michele Arcangelo. At this point, proceed straight ahead along the same road that leads to the Hermitage of San Donato, then up slopes that are already demanding. But above all, at the sign for Villaga, turn right towards the Opera Pia Raggio di Sole community. It is here that, on recently resurfaced ground, we encounter the final two hundred metres of the ramp, definitely the most challenging. Fortunately, the stretch above 15% is short, but only the most trained can think of getting to the end of the road and doing the last fifty metres in concrete.
All in all, it is an unattractive climb, on a narrow road and with no scenic attraction. The only reason to do it is this final climb, if you really want to experience such steep slopes.
