IMPORTANT. The road around the west side of Lake Vyrnwy is currently closed (expected to reopen Spring 2026) so there is no access to the start of the climb. I rode down from Bwlch y Groes and back up. The first 2.5 km of the climb is the steepest and has short sections where the road surface is degraded to just gravel, although still rideable. The upper part of the climb is a delight as the gradient lessens significantly, the surface improves, and the route has a wild and desolate feel. The road surface does suffer from water seepage off the mountain side so could be icy in cold weather. It's an interesting climb and a nice contrast to the other two routes up to Bwlch y Groes.
